Breeze Through the Airport on Your Next Trip!

Planning your girlfriend getaway? It's fun and exciting and you can't wait to go - but then you get to the airport and WHAM! It feel's like you've hit a roadblock.

Long lines at check-in, long lines at security, endless waiting to board - and you've paid for this "privilege"?

Yes, you have; you've probably also paid for checking your bags, seat assignments - and you'll pay for a meal or snack onboard, too.

Flying isn't what it used to be. But it doesn't have to be a nightmare, either.

If you're leaving US borders, make sure your passport is up to date. Travel to Canada, Mexico, and almost all of the Caribbean require a passport since 2009. While Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are US Territories and you are not required to have a passport, bear in mind that your flight may be diverted at some point, and a passport can become necessary. The same is true if you're taking an ocean cruise in the area. And most countries require your passport to be valid for 3 to 6 months after your travel dates - don't cut it too close!

Be aware of the TSA requirements for liquids, gels, and creams in your carry-on bag. Yes, I know, this has been in effect for ages - but it's easy to forget, especially if you're taking a quick weekend getaway and don't plan to check your bag. I've done it myself - don't take a full size bottle of shampoo! Check your toothpaste tube and makeup bag, too; lotions and even lipstick should be less than 3 ounces, and placed in a clear plastic bag.

• If you have a long layover during your trip, some airports have a few interesting things to do while you're waiting for your flight You'll find airports with spas and massage tables, casinos, sleeping pods - even a 9-hole golf course!

Most importantly, be patient and keep your cool. Plan on lines and delays; don't be in too much of a hurry or take a flight with a short layover (less than an hour is pushing it). I'd rather bring a book and spend a couple of hours between flights than miss a connection and scramble for another one! has the most to offer.

Next month, we'll talk about spas - it's a great way to treat yourself for Mother's Day - or any day!

Until next time - Happy Travels!
