NYC Walking Tours and Other North American Adventures!

Taking a NYC walking tour is one of the best ways to get to know the city - you're right there on the sidewalk, in the park, in the shops, talking to people.

There are many cities in North America that are great for walking. New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans have many walking tours, but there are others, as well.

And there are self-guided audio tours available if you want to head out on your own, at your own pace. You can go sightseeing in NYC, or follow a special interest on a culinary tour or ghost tour.

New York City has tours for every interest, from food to photography to music

Private New York Photo Walking Tour: Central Park and Uptown Manhattan - This tour features a professional photographer as your tour guide - so you not only see and learn about the history and architecture of New York, you get great photos along the way! You'll see Manhattan and Times Square from a different perspective, and get a CD with at least 75 photos of your trip.

NYC's Original Rock 'n' Roll Walking Tour - See where the Ramones, the Doors, and the Who hung out in NYC. This trip through the East Village covers 3 eras of music: rock, punk, and glam. You'll see the most famous performance venues, as well as some of the early homes of those destined to become rock stars!

The Arthur Avenue Walking Tour - This culinary tour through an historic Italian neighborhood introduces you to butchers, cheese makers, and bakeries. You'll see how egg noodles are made and sample a wide variety of treats along the way.

5th Avenue and Central Park - This self-guided audio tour allows you to get aquainted with New York at your own pace. Starting on at 110th St, you'll travel 5th Avenue and Central Park, visiting museums and shops along the way. You can do this tour in and hour and a half - or take all day strolling!

You can find tons of cheap NYC Hotels on Kayak!

San Francisco has great architecture tours, as well as tours of it's varied neighborhoods

Vampire Tour of San Francisco- Who knew there were vampires in San Francisco? This fun tour of Nob Hill stops at several historic locations, and the costumed guide offers both the history of the locale and a spooky vampire story related to the site.

Chinatown Walking Tour and Dinner - After enjoying a fine meal in an authentic Chinese restaurant, you'll explore the herb shops, temples, and markets of Chinatown - and even stop at a fortune cookie factory! San Francisco's Chinatown is one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Asia and has a ton of interesting sites to offer.

Stroll San Francisco - the Whole Shebang - This self-guided audio tour is 4 hours long, and covers ALL of San Francisco - 33 individual tours! With a map included, you can explore the city and hear fun (and sometimes risque) stories along the way.

New Orleans is famous for ghost and cemetery tours, as well as great food

New Orleans Ghost Tour- This is an after-dark tour which includes a stop at the cemetery, but also stops at hotels, taverns, and homes that claim to be haunted. (There is a bus portion to transport you between the French Quarter and the cemetery).

Cemetery and Gris-Gris Walking Tour- This is a walking tour of the famous St. Louis Cemetery #1. You'll visit the tomb of the "voodoo queen" of New Orleans and learn about the practice of voodoo, as well at the burial practices in this city that sits below sea level (that fact is significant in how they bury their dead!)

Garden District Walking Tour - There is more to New Orleans than ghosts! This charming tour visits the beautiful homes and gardens of the Garden District. You can learn about the history and architecture of this area - and, of course, you will also visit the cemetery! (There is a bus portion to transport you between the French Quarter and the cemetery).

New Orleans The French Quarter MP3 Audio Walking Tour

New Orleans The French Quarter MP3 Audio Walking Tour - This self-guided audio tour takes you through the French Quarter, from Bourbon Street to Jackson Square. You'll hear about the history of the area, and the effects of Hurricane Katrina. This tour can take 2 - 4 hours, depending on your pace.

Another option for exploring almost any city by foot is the "Hop On, Hop Off" bus or trolley tours. Many cities have these tours - you buy a pass to get on and off the bus or trolley as often as you want, then explore the nearby area on foot. Get back on the bus and go to another part of the city to explore. These are a great way to get the feel of a city.

Other Great Places for Walks in the U.S.

Miami's South Beach Walk - This self-guided tour of Miami's art deco district covers the history and architecture of many great buildings, and there's tons of restaurants, bars, and shopping along the way! Print out the info and take it with you as you browse one of the best beach areas in Florida.

Arizona Women's Adventure - This is a 6-day excursion to beautiful Sedona, AZ, and the Grand Canyon. No, you do not walk from Sedona to the canyon! You will stay a few nights in each location and take daily hikes around the region.Yoga and spa treatments are options, too - this tour is strictly for women.

Hawaii - the Big Island - This week-long tour takes you to Volcanoes National Park on the east side of the island, walking on hardened lava and through lave tubes. On the western side of the island, you'll visit beaches and another national park, the site of a former refuge for criminals and those seeking redemption. You can paddle an outrigger canoe and get up close to flora, fauna and amazing waterfalls.

Alaska - Kenai Penninsula - This week-long tour takes you into the Alaskan wilderness, where you'll see snow-capped mountains, glaciers, frontier towns, and abundant wildlife. You'll also visit Kachemak Bay State Park, which you will explore on foot and in kayaks.
