Milwaukee Art Museum
The Milwaukee Art Museum has a wonderful collection of Haitian art and Folk art, along with Georgia O'Keefe, Grant Wood, Warhol, and other masters.
But the museum is perhaps best known for it's new architecture - an addition designed by Santiago Calatrava. The highlight of the addition is the "brise solei", which look like wings that open and close.
When open, it resembles a whale's tail from the back, bird's wings from the side.
When closed, it looks like a ship with the sails down.
Located along Lake Michigan, the addition is full of windows and natural light, and has magnificent views of the lake.
The orange sunray sculpture in the front is "The Calling," by Mark di Suvero, and is quite controversial. Many in Milwaukee hate it; I'm sort of neutral. I'm not thrilled with it, but it's bright and cheerful so I'm OK with it.
This is pretty much the Milwaukee skyline, such as it is. We don't have a lot of very tall buildings.
On the left, towards the back, is the US Bank building, the tallest in Milwaukee.
On the right, you'll see an older brick building and you may be able to make out something on the top. That's the old Wisconsin Gas building, and that thing on the top is a flame (glass with lights inside). The color of the flame reflects the weather forecast (blue for cold weather, red for hot, etc).
Milwaukee Lakefront
The Milwaukee lakefront is a busy place. You can walk, bike, or skate along the lake, and it's the location of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World and Betty Brinn Children's museums, the Summerfest grounds, and several very nice parks.
In Veteran's Park, just north of the art museum, you can fly a kite purchased a Gift of Wings. This has become a very popular activity, as the winds off the lake make it one of the best kite-flying areas in the country! The 2 "blobs" in the photo are octopus kites! The building on the left is the front of the art museum.
