Light weight luggage is a life-saver (not to mention a back-saver!) when you're traveling. The best travel luggage is made of nylon fabrics and light but strong metals and plastics that make these bags sturdy yet easy to handle at the airport.
Of course, you'll want bags with wheels, especially for your larger bags. But you'll have to lift them at some point, so you might at well get the lightest bags you can find!
Airlines are imposing more fees for overweight bags these days (for most airlines the cutoff is 50 pounds), so bags that weigh as little as possible are a real money-saver, too.
There is a wide variety of bags available, from small cosmetic bags to the 30" behemoth that will hold everything you need for a week or more!
Even if the bags don't weigh much, however, bear in mind that what's in them can weigh a lot, causing backaches and, possibly, those pesky overweight charges. And unlike hard sided luggage, soft sided bags stretch and expand - it's amazing how much you can stuff into them, and it's tempting to overstuff! (Be aware, too, that soft bags don't protect your breakable items like hard bags, so pack souvenirs carefully!)
Try, as much as possible, to limit how much you bring with you (you can refer to
"what to pack"
for ideas and information). I try to limit a week's clothing and toiletries to one 26 - 28" bag, with a nice tote bag as a carry-on. It's much more manageable than the 29 - 30" bags!
