Explore the Many Colors of a Fall Getaway Weekend

There's nothing like a fall getaway weekend for fun and relaxation. Maybe you just got the kids off to school, or maybe you've had a whirlwind of activities during the summer and now it's time to re-connect with your sisters or girlfriends. Vacation destinations are quieter and less crowded, but there's still plenty of nice weather to get out and enjoy!

Autumn, of course, is made for "leaf peeping". Across the country, the leaves are changing colors from shades of green to yellow, gold, orange, and red.

Forests and small groves of trees are a stunning site;it's well worth a drive to enjoy this seasonal spectacle!

And the festivals! Wine fests, harvest or pumkpin festivals -every region celebrates the end of the growing season and the resulting abundance.

Everyone thinks of New England when it comes to fall colors. But where there are trees (which is everywhere in the US!), you'll find a gorgeous palatte of color. From the Tennessee Valley's Autumn Leaf Train, to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, to the backroads of Illinois or Idaho, plan a weekend in October for the best color.

You can add a folilage tour to a Boston getaway; a full day of sightseeing in the countryside outside of the city. In addition to the changing colors, you'll enjoy the fruits of the harvest at an apple orchard, and a Yankee lunch along the way.

Or, head south of Boston to Cape Cod. While it may not be warm enough for swimming, you can still enjoy a walk on the beach as well as the colorful foliage on along the roads. A harbor cruise is included; imagine how much more beautiful the coastline is in full color!

Speaking of cruises, there are a number of fall cruises available along the coastlines and in the rivers around the US. The American Queen Steamboat Company travels the Mississippi with 3 to 7 night fall foliage cruises. Re-live the splendor of the old Mississippi riverboats, and enjoy the colorful scenery along the way!

American Cruise Lines has ships on the east coast and most of the major rivers in the US. Their Hudson River cruises in October focus on the foliage along the river, but any of their cruises in the Northeast or Pacific Northwest (Columbia and Snake rivers) are bound to be colorful, too.

Be sure to check CruiseCompete to get the best price on whatever cruise you choose. Travel agents will compete for your business, and you don't have to lift a finger!

So, What About Those Festivals?

Well, mid-October brings a Pumpkin Festival in Keene, New Hampshire with hayrides, crafts, music, fireworks - and thousands of pumpkins!

Albequerque, New Mexico, has a hot-air balloon festival in early October; if colorful leaves aren't your "thing", maybe colorful balloons will entice you! Some of them are truly spectacular - an amusing.

And there are wine festivals everywhere!

The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail offers wine tastings at 16 wineries in Northwestern Michigan. There's also a charity run in early September.

If you're enjoying a getaway in New York, take a day trip to Long Island to see the leaves, do some shopping, and enjoy some wine. You'll visit 3 of the finest wineries in the area before hitting the outlet mall.

Of course, you'll find plenty of wineries in Napa Valley. If you're visiting San Francisco, enjoy a day trip to 4 premium wineries (with tastings), and a ferry back to the city at the end of the day. It's much nicer than doing the driving yourself!

Summer isn't the only time to get together with the girls. Relax and enjoy a fall getaway near you!
